A Browser RPG in Today’s World

What comes to mind when you think of a Browser RPG? If you are like most modern gamers you will most likely associate a Browser RPG with a text based game or maybe something with the graphics along the lines of pong. Is this what you think? Well if so, I don’t blame you. I’ve played my share of browser games and let me tell you something; most look like something copy pasted straight from a 1980’s Atari system. Not that there is anything wrong with Atari, I’m just saying..it’s 2011… put in a little effort please. Ok, now with that being said; there are some really fantastic titles out there, and if games like those can become the norm, well than the Browser RPG will have a comfortable seat in the gaming arena.

Allow me to point out a few things that I have noticed while browsing several Browser MMORPG titles. For one; having Google ads or the like splattered all over the place, the game will not be able to compete with titles on more popular gaming platforms. Now if its a free to play Browser RPG, I can understand having an ad somewhere out of the way on the page, after all; server bills are not free, trust me. I’ll even consider clicking on one if the game is any good. Go ahead and join the bandwagon and help these guys out. Good games deserve our help.

Ok, not that text-based games are bad, I’m just saying that there are so many text-based Browser RPG games out there compared to interactive graphical ones. I would really like to see more game developers take on the challenge of interactive graphical browser based mmorpgs. With modern web technology, it does not take a super genius to put one together, again trust me on that lol. I like text-based Browser RPGs, but am frustrated by having to shuffle through them to find a decent one with graphics.

Game play. Even more important than graphics is how the game plays. Is it confusing to accomplish what should be simple tasks? Is the game buggy and full of errors? A Browser RPG that is unplayable is obviously no fun. Instead of having to navigate through endless pages to accomplish goals, I’d like to see a Browser RPG that takes it from the console games and has a quick 2 page (panel) or less screen system. Not that there aren’t console games that have screen navigation issues but generally, especially compared to browser games, have it right…good ol’ Zelda.

I really want to see the Browser RPG become a dominant force in the gaming industry. Their availability and the fact that a lot of them are totally free to play, is really great. As a gamer and player of Browser RPG’s we can help by simply making suggestions in the forums (hopefully they have one) of the games that have serious potential. So many games have it so close minus a few minor details. Lets make the world a better place…well for gamers at least.
